The opening of The Woo Building at the Royal College of Art has brought all the fine art programmes together at a single site for the first time. The building, named in honour of Sir Po-Shing and Lady Helen Woo, sees a significant expansion of the Ceramics and Glass, and Jewellery and Metal departments, and marks the completion of the RCA's Battersea Campus. The building concludes our trio of buildings, which also includes the Dyson and Sackler.
“Haworth Tompkins' new building for the RCA is a dream centre for creative production.“
Robert Bevan, The London Evening Standard
The factory-inspired Woo Building promotes collaboration across programmes, with the flow and shape allowing cross-disciplinary interactions. A new ceramics facility, unique to the RCA, has been installed together with a state-of-the-art kiln room. The triple height Machine Hall is extended to afford a 50m long workspace, overlooked by all departments.
The Jewellery and Metal programme is housed on the top two floors where the high-ceilinged studios are flooded with natural light from overhead skylights and windows provide an inspiring view of London. The workshops are housed in clearly defined spaces enclosed by glazed screens reinforcing visual connectivity between processes. The airy Gateway Studio is cradled by external steel trusses, which cantilever from the main Woo Building concrete frame, and mark the threshold into the site from Howie Street.
