Part of the Elephant and Castle early housing programme, Haworth Tompkins are working with Southwark Council and Guinness Trust to develop a site on Stead Street to provide sixty residential units and a new community facility. Currently used as a car park, the site is long and very narrow. In order to minimise the impact of the development on the neighbours, the design seeks to avoid an impermeable terrace development, to ensure that a degree of visual and physical permeability and connections with the adjacent Nursery Road Park are retained. This leads to a development of three distinct blocks.
