The Whitworth Art Gallery

Haworth Tompkins were shortlisted in an RIBA run competition to look at design options to remodel and refurbish the existing Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester and design a new extension that reconnected the Gallery and its collection to the surrounding Whitworth Park. The project sought to reconcile light, art, architecture and landscape. An extension was proposed to create a second formal facade to the Gallery. The form allowed the entrance to be in the centre of the plan rather than at one end, avoided deep internal spaces and provided the maximum perimeter for connection and views to the park.
