Haworth Tompkins were asked to submit a preliminary appraisal for The Playhouse in Newcastle. The Playhouse is over thirty years old and a well-made, carefully considered building but with a number of architectural and urban limitations. The proposals fell into four categories: firstly, the re-organisation and enlargement of the front of house spaces to connect the Playhouse to the Gulbenkian Studio and establish a more accessible and welcoming relationship with the city; secondly, to provide a new rehearsal room, media suite, recording studio and general purpose room to supplement existing spaces; thirdly to transform the capabilities of the Playhouse; and finally to upgrade the technical systems to current standards.
