Haworth Tompkins was awarded second place in an international competition to design a new Turner Centre Art Gallery in Margate. The site for the building was situated on the edge of town, below a chalk cliff adjacent to the sea. The idea of a single, simple form, an iconic, elemental structure held out over the coastline - a coastal acropolis - broke away from the essentially domestic language of the town itself and allowed the building and its landscape to explore an architectural language which was based on archetypal forms with a direct response to the sea air, light and water.
