Ovingdean Hall School
Ovingdean is a specialist school in Sussex for deaf children. Haworth Tompkins were commissioned to investigate a new arts centre including a theatre, music rooms and studios. Working closely with the staff and children, a landscape-based proposal was developed that maintained the integrity of the historic school buildings and took full advantage of extensive views of the South Downs. The new building was designed as a landscaped terrace, with a grassed roof and a trellised frontage. In this way the building acted as a green barrier to hide the view of the residential buildings and restore the architectural prominence of the Hall.
