Haworth Tompkins were one of six practices short-listed to design a new art gallery on the Welbeck Estate in Nottinghamshire to house the collection of fine paintings and decorative arts assembled by Welbeck's former owners. The initial design explored how the new gallery would bring the presence of a quarter mile long equestrian exercise area. The highly profiled roof, with a decorative metal surface designed to weather over time, announces the building from a distance as visitors enter the estate. A formalized approach and landscaped ante-room create a heightened setting for the gallery and an illusion of entering a unique and special place.
