Haworth Tompkins were invited by Exeter College to participate in a limited design competition for the college's new 'third quadrangle' on Walton Street. The scheme includes the retention and conversion of the former Ruskin College along with a significant new extension to create halls of residence and teaching spaces. The proposals create a series of flexible, interconnected spaces at ground floor level around a pair of external quadrangles.
The quads differed in character in response to the existing site conditions and the programme of the adjacent rooms; the first, being sheltered and paved, would be accessible to visitors and could double as a reception space, the second would be more private landscaped courtyard with a lawn and perimeter planting. Undergraduate rooms, Fellows' studies and Research Fellows' apartments are located on the upper floors, arranged around a series of collegiate staircases.
