—
landscape-led scheme in north London
Haworth Tompkins, together with Landscape Projects, have designed a proposal for up to 130 affordable homes for NHS staff within a high-quality landscaped garden. We were commissioned by Community Health Partnerships, to explore proposals for these on land adjacent to Finchley Memorial Hospital, in a bid to support both recruitment and retention of staff for London hospitals.
The landscape-led design approach ensures that the development creates a coherent, continuous, biodiverse and attractive setting, in which buildings, vehicle access and resident and public spaces are integrated alongside SUDS and a range of natural habitats. The building placement ensures key views and routes through the site are retained.
The proposal takes account of the site constraints, including retention of existing trees, the level changes across the site, and the prevailing local sub-urban character including set back frontages and hedged front gardens. The buildings have been designed as clustered forms to help break down their scale, with a series of different heights and shorter façade lengths along any one elevation. The project obtained outline planning permission in 2021.
