Steve is a founding director of Haworth Tompkins alongside Graham Haworth. He co-led the studio’s performing arts portfolio with Roger Watts, also working on projects in the higher education, housing and masterplanning fields.
He trained at Bath University before joining the multi-disciplinary practice Arup Associates in 1985 and was a founding member of Bennetts Associates in 1987. He has taught and lectured throughout his career and is currently an external examiner at the University of Cambridge. Steve is also a trustee of the Young Vic theatre in London and an advisory board member of Blueprint for All (formerly the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust) and the arts sustainability organisation Julie’s Bicycle.
In 2019 he co-founded Architects Declare, a network of architectural practices committed to addressing the climate and biodiversity emergency, now active in 27 countries. In 2024, Graham stepped down as a director at HT and welcomed his new role providing support as a consultant to the studio.
